Lyricist Neil Peart collaborated with sci-fi novelist Kevin J. Anderson, who wrote a book with the album's story, under the same title.

The cover art displays the time at 9:12 (21:12 in 24-hour time past noon) in reference to the album 2112.

BU2B stands for "Brought Up to Believe".

This album was dedicated in memory of the photographer Andrew MacNaughtan.
