Salem's Pot - Pronounce This!

Sold Our Souls for Doom N Roll - 100%

HarriSunnO, March 9th, 2019

Pronounce This! kicks! Pronounce This! rips! Pronounce This! slaps! Pronounce This! does just about anything that would give someone a reasonable dose of pain without the shelter of a metaphor.

In 2016, Salem's Pot made their final return with a true magnum opus in the style of Stoner Rock / Heavy Psych with a solid injection of their Doom Metal roots reaching through the diverse songwriting, and solidifying the entity of Salem's Pot as one of the strongest entities to have ever existed in heavy music. ...Lurar ut dig på prärien was an exceptional debut record that portrayed one of the most exciting bands in Doom Metal in 2014, but the band was unsatisfied being locked into that box alongside an ever-growing stoner crowd that was having a resurgence around that time. Upon their exciting return, Salem's Pot broke free from the binds that held them within the confines of the genre with a much more pronounceable album title, giving the people a perfect fusion of their influences.

The album is separated into two distinct halves. The A-Side is a rocking, demolishing collection of songs, and any sane listener won't be sitting still for a single second of its duration. The second half is one that delves back in time to the band's roots. It's much slower overall, but not nearly as thick as the preceding album, so instead of being a B-Side that regresses to what the artist has known before, it redefines it to a tasteful array of hypnotic Heavy Psych bliss. The two sides contrast with each other to provide the listener with the ability to scratch multiple itches with one listen through. No matter how many times I play this record, I'm never unsatisfied once it's over, as it delivers just about everything that I could want on a modern Psychedelic Stoner Rock release.

I've particularly noticed that a lot of people really like to complain about how this record isn't as heavy as the debut, and they're absolutely right, but it is significantly better. Pronounce This! has some things that the debut doesn't, and those elements are sassiness and sauciness. A lot like Satan's Satyrs, the band has a vintage groove that's as infectious and catchy as it is jammy and heavy. What Salem's Pot does differently from its peers, is seamlessly combine influences to create cohesive songs that often reach around the ten-minute running time without becoming cliche or boring. This is a completely fresh take on the stoner rock genre, and I wish that the band had stuck around to deliver more of this, because other bands just aren't doing what Salem's Pot did here. If you're in the group that hates this one, listen to it until it makes sense. Keep on groovin'.
