KEYBOARD ATTACK!!! - 80%

MrBall, July 2nd, 2005

While being black metal, it has a very clean production. One of my favorite characteristics of black metal is its raw production. A good example would be Emperor’s Wrath of the Tyrants EP. I then noticed the use of electronics, such as keyboards and realized this was the genre metal nerds liked to call “Post Black” metal. Genres are getting out of hand. I’ll save that for another topic though. Despite its clean production, this is some pretty decent stuff. To like …And Oceans you are going to have to like the use of keyboards, because that’s what gives the band and each individual song it’s personality. The drums and guitars, while being decent, just don’t stand out. They are rather basic black metal drumbeats. Sometimes the drumming shows some death metal elements, a good example being the middle of “Som Oppna Bocker”. DGoT is rather melodic, but as I said it’s all thanks to the keyboards, which add atmosphere. Nothing better then hearing a pause in the keyboard only to have the empty space filled in by Kenny, their vocalist. It adds some nice atmosphere, and may even catch you off guard like it did me. You’ll get used to it because Kenny does those little evil laughs throughout the album. He is a great vocalist, his voice blends well with the music, it isn’t very high and unbearable like some black metal *cough*BURZUM*cough*. If you’re someone heavy into guitar, this …And Oceans may not be for you. The guitar is simply used to back the keyboards, which are very good and bring a nice melodic edge to the metal these guys produce. This band is an interesting one and I can’t wait to check out some more of their work.
