Physical releases that have a digital version description tag:
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=141933&p=3143801#p3143801Digital releases that have 'numbered' in their description:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... tal#albumsFinding and fixing dead links on the site:
Type this into Google: "#invalid" Metallum
Sometimes there are additional results by typing in "#invalid" "metal archives" (last cleaned up March 5, 2024)
This search should be run occasionally to check for incorrectly-entered releases that use format: 'other' -
- in "search albums" copy and paste the following into both 'version description' and 'additional notes' boxes, and select 'other' in format:
-reel -+ -*rom -*box* -*micro* -vhd -CDV -DUALDISC -*max* -*8* -vcd -beta -videodisc -minidisc -card -laser* -pizza -*usb* -cartridge -stick -*diskette* -floppy
Check through the results, as people often enter in digital or unknown formats as 'other', and that is wrong. To take into consideration: Mini CD or 3" CD (should be marked 'CD') is not the same format as MiniDisc (should be marked 'other').
Misc tasks:
Researching bands of unknown location -
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=137584 (looked through all of them, completed 6/16/2023. After a couple years, someone might want to do this again.)
Finding city and double-checking/adding information for US bands with no listed city:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=137774&p=3083903#p3083903Important note: when incorrect grammar or wording is part of a title or quote, it shouldn't be changed.A list of phrases and instances where with an edit, sentence structure/grammar could potentially be improved, as well as notes that are out of place, instances that could use research, releases that shouldn't be listed, etc.
Digital release listed as being limited edition:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... tal#albums"relocated" in bio/additional notes - should check that it's documented in 'location' field.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"will be" in album notes - this is usually typed in about an upcoming release, which by this point has been released and that wording was never updated (and shouldn't have been used since its context would quickly expire) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums(completed in recording notes and I think all of the ones where it's used in the wrong context are cleaned up from bios for the moment).
"in the works" - problematic phrase, because often once what had been in the works is completed, the note isn't updated. This is invalid in some cases and should be removed.
(in bio) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands(in release info) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"to be released" in release notes:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- "to be released" in main page bio:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"should be" - often a problematic phrase, and one to check back on on occasion:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"edition" in recording notes:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums(notes like this should be moved to additional notes - this is for recording notes only)
"previously" in recording notes:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums(these are mostly speaking about where the tracks were released previously, and those parts belong in 'additional notes', not 'recording notes'.
"demotape" in release notes: should be demo tape - should be demo tape.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums70s - if referring to the decade, should be '70s
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands80s - if referring to the decade, should be '80s
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands90s - if referring to the decade, should be '90s
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands00s - if referring to the decade, should be '00s
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"booklet" in release version description: these, and often other details included in the field in this search should just be in additional notes, not the version description.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"available for free download" (subtracting the word -were) - should be checked to see if these once-true statements are still, and edited accordingly. In some cases they can be changed to are/were, in others 'had once been' -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"lavish" in album notes (this is more an opinion than fact, and should be removed) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"amazing" in album notes - opinion, should be removed.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"incredible" in album notes - should be removed if it's an opinion
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"most likely" in band bios - (try to find out what is being assumed or seems likely, so that the page won't have to say that and the facts can be updated) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"year unknown" in additional notes - could be researched and filled in:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"format unknown" in additional notes - could be researched and filled in:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsWords 'unreleased' and 'discography' in the bio. Be sure that nothing unreleased is under a discography header. A better header (if worth mentioning at all) would be either Unreleased, or Additional recording / Additional recordings. Note: a format, like CD or tape should never be mentioned for an unreleased recording.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search?s ... lbum_titleWords 'discography' and 'never released' in bio. Be sure that an unreleased recording isn't under Discography header, or Releases header, but only under a header Unreleased, or Additional recording, with (unreleased) beside the title and details. Note: a format, like CD or tape should never be mentioned for an unreleased recording.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands- similar search, but with 'not released'
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands (last completed Jan. 5, '23)
"can be downloaded" - see above. Should be looked into to find out if they are actually still downloadable, and edited accordingly:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"can download" - see 2 searches posted above this. Need to find out if they are actually still downloadable or not, and edit the sentences accordingly:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsalbum search "downloadable" - should see if they are still downloadable. If not, edit note so that it is in the past tense: 'had been downloadable...'
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"(unknown track)" - a lot of these are for compilation appearances, and sometimes the song can be easily found online and the title filled in:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsalbum search 'download' - should see if they are still downloadable. If listed as digital, this note can be removed. If they are no longer downloadable, list in past tense (had been downloadable at the band's homepage, for example) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"joins" in bio/additional notes - in most cases, should be "joined" (and the rest of the bio should be checked to make sure that the words are in the correct tense) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"pages booklet" - in most cases should be changed to page booklet. Example: Three-page booklet instead of three-pages booklet. (caught up, Jan. 12th '23)
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumsphrase "has released" in bio/additional notes (in most cases would be better to erase the word 'has', or change to 'have released':
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands(completed Jan. 15, 2023 - 11 cases are contextually fine the way they are).
CDR / CDr in bio: should be changed to CD-R:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands(completed Jan. 7, 2023)
CDR / CDr in release additional notes: should be changed to CD-R if necessary to include, or just fill in CD-R in format description instead.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumsCDR / CD-R in recording notes: should never be there. Be sure it's formatted as CD-R, and mention it where necessary in format description box and/or additional notes (last completed Jan. 5, 2023)
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumsIn/at the beginning/end of .... (year) - should be changed to (example) 'early 2007', or 'late 1986' (next 4 searches) -

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsA couple of searches for potential incorrectly formatted compilation appearance listings:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsMost of these have underlining in the formatting, which isn't preferred compared to bold text, and they often include other errors or poor formatting:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsIn album release notes, "upcoming" - not sure how important this would be, but makes more sense to say "then-upcoming" in my opinion, since it is no longer upcoming.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- "Now" in band bio/additional notes (reference to a present tense ages poorly in a long-term database. Some of these no longer apply and should be edited) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands- "Said to be" phrase in album notes. If the claims mentioned in these examples could be looked into for degree of certainty, then determined if it is true information and this phrase can be removed, or if not certain, whether or not the information being stated is worth keeping as only a possibility that it could be the truth, that would be great:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- a similar search to the one listed above, the first being "allegedly" in band notes, the second for the word appearing in release notes:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- phrase "some kind of":
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"some sort of":
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands- suggested search: there are a lot of cases where a country isn't capitalized within band bio/additional notes - examples: France, French, Italian, Spanish, etc.
"year unknown" - these can be researched, and information changed from being unknown if possible

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"currently" in bio/additional notes - doesn't age well in a long-term database. Should be looked into to see if what is mentioned is actually current, and consider changing wording. In some cases can be deleted, others changed to "last known to be".
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"current" in bio/additional notes - doesn't age well in a long-term database. Should be looked into to see if what is mentioned is actually current, and consider changing wording. In some cases can be deleted, others changed to "last known".
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandsword "apparently" in band bio/additional notes - fact should be looked into, not left like this on the site. Change to 'reportedly' in worst-case scenario.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"concept" in recording notes - should be in additional notes:

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"Compilations" - should be changed to Compilation appearance(s), Compilation appearances (if more than one):
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands'Has released' - <b>Discography:</b> or <b>Additional discography:</b> would be better, and (year/format unknown) if applicable -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"unsure" in release description - if it's not the only/parent entry, can be changed to unknown release year. If it is the only entry, it should be added to the band's <b>Additional discography</b> notes with the track listing, and year unknown. The same should be done for releases where it is the full track listing that isn't known:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumsIn song titles, some people enter in centuries-old classical songs followed by (Beethoven cover). That should be removed, and instead in additional notes it should say:
(for example) Track 11 was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Compilation appearances: formatting can be checked and corrected -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bandscorrect formatting for one song:
<b>Compilation appearance(s):</b>
- "Aces High" on <i>Maiden Heaven Volume 2 - An All-Star Tribute to {band 25}</i> (Kerrang! Magazine, 2016)
"on CD", "on vinyl", "on tape/cassette" preferable over "in CD", "in vinyl", "in tape/cassette". Usually found in release notes, but sometimes also in bio on main page. Sometimes the note can be deleted altogether, if the version being described is entered in as a release.

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- can go through the numbers, searching for "an 1*", "an one", "an 2*", etc.
"uncertain" in band bio/additional notes - should be researched, determined whether the note is relevant enough to stay.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"our" in recording notes (should be changed to 'the band's' in most cases, unless there are quotation marks - in some instances it would be appropriate to add quotation marks.) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"our" in release additional notes - should be changed to refer to the band, rather than the information coming directly from a band member, unless in quotations, or if it would be appropriate to add quotation marks -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums"new" in bio/additional notes on band pages - is sometimes fine, but other times out-of-place and doesn't age well with a long-term database.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... ame=#bands"unreleased discography" in bio/additional notes - should be changed to unreleased recording, or unreleased recordings if plural:

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums(word 'composed' in recording notes) - writing, composition notes should be in additional notes, not the box for recording info:

https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums-
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums-
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- these are just some searches at random for such cases, but aren't a complete list of them. This will give you an idea of what to search for, though.
- searches for common misspellings, and common words like 'the the', 'with with', etc. appearing twice in a row can also be performed. Though it was recently cleaned up in band notes, there are a lot of spelling errors where a letter appears 3 times in a row in release/recording notes. By typing, for example *ttt*, you can get a list of all of the times that t appears 3 times in a row. It's usually a misspelling when a letter appears three times in a row, obviously (sometimes a catalog #, or a title that appears this way, though).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This part has its own separate post, but I'll include it here because it is a lot of work that someone might end up (more likely) finding here and working on instead of the other post) -
Here are some searches that lead to hundreds of albums in the database that may not have actually been released. After researching, the notes should either be removed if not the case, or flagged for deletion and listed in the band's bio/additional notes section as:
<b>Additional recording(s):</b>
- "Title" (year, unreleased; track listing: ..../ ..../ ...../.....)
(not "Additional discography", since it is only a recording, not part of the discography)
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums(Some of these just need the word 'previously' added in front of the word unreleased, to avoid confusion) -
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumshttps://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums (given to a few friends - not an official release)
Here is a search where the version description is 'test pressing' - usually not a valid release by the site's standards.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albumsIf anyone has ideas for similar searches that would reveal project-sized clean-ups worth our time, feel free to post them - they can be added to this main list.
Some that have been completed, but would be worth checking again for on occasion:
- compliation
- apparentely
- apearances
- in version description: *mc* and *mcd* descriptors should be removed
- lenght
- relased
- rythm
- "band disbanded"
- "splitted up" / "Splited Up"
- "pages booklet" - should be "page booklet" - instead of 12 pages booklet, 12-page booklet, for example.
- backcover (back cover)
- frontcover (front cover)
- lyricsheet (lyric sheet)
- propably
- officialy
- distibuted
- avilable
- avaliable
- avalible, etc.
- "somewhere in (year)". Should be reworded.
- Turkey (Türkiye)
- recordered (common misspelling)
- "in the middle of... (year)" - better-worded as mid-2006, as an example.
- percussions (the word should never be plural)
- on photo, on the picture, on pic, etc. - should be 'in' instead of 'on'. 'Pic' should be replaced with photo, or picture.
- lyrical theme 'denounce' - change to denunciation, or denouncement.
- 2 letters after calendar day with wrong letters after them (last fixed on March 31 - examples that were cleaned up: 2th, 22th, 21th, 12nd, 31th) The 4 variations are: nd, st, rd, th. Typing in numbers 1-31 before each one often yield results for a mistaken variation, which always sound terrible when reading through a band's bio.
- a search within band bio field to look for sentences without a period at the end (last cleaned March 31, 2023) -
*,* -*.* -last -unreleased -discography -compilation -release* -confused
- opinions expressed in album notes, or elsewhere. 'Beautiful', 'stunning', and 'gorgeous' are some examples that can be found where they don't belong on album releases. Cleaned those 3 up last on April 3rd, '23.
- misspellings of 'recorded', 'recording', etc:
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums- a few different issues with 'drum machine' - two words, not drum-machine (no dash). "A drum machine was used on this recording" is preferred over "Recorded with a drum machine". That should be in additional notes, not recording information.
Other things that should occasionally be looked for: DVDs listed as being released prior to 1998 (they existed in Japan since late '97, US since early '98, but it was very rare for a metal band's video to be released on that format in 1997 or earlier), and CD-Rs prior to 1995 (I don't think they were too common before 1998 or so, but maybe I'm wrong. It's a safe bet that prior to 1995 it's at least worth checking on the release to make sure that both the year and format are accurate.)
Other searches: digital releases listed as numbered or limited edition - often an error. *cd-r* in release additional notes, but -*cd-r* in version is a search that sometimes leads to issues that can be cleaned up.
