Just thought of another cool one.

My favorite Black Sabbath logo is easily the one on the Dehumanizer album:

I like that one a lot, but the Master of Reality logo still reigns supreme.

Also, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is by far their best album cover. I'd probably put Dehumanizer second.

I love shiny band logos, same goes for most cover art that features some sort of shiny steel, chrome and stuff:

I'm into many logos that are designed symmetrically (that means I like many black metal bands' logos):

I like both the old and new one:

Pointy and spiky ones are always great! Also fits the music, at least for these two bands:

Many classic logos I like are Motörhead, Maiden, Priest, Saxon, Testament, Twisted Sister, ...

Miscellaneous I like:

Changes that were lame as hell:

For Sarcófago: typical nineties bullshit. There are many more bands that fucked up their band logos back then.
And Immolation as mentioned earlier here.

A band that somehow never got it right:
Spoiler: show

And W.A.S.P. ... No real band logo, mostly shitty fonts and mostly lame cover art (except their first two and Helldorado).

I agree that the red one is by far the best version but in my opinion it's still very unspectacular (= it sucks) ^^ .

@The Red Tower props for mentioning the Ambush logo. They have the best logo and artwork for a modern traditional metal band by far.

This one is very awesome, since the band is called "WahnMache / Mahnwache"

I don't like Belphegor's logo, it's very lame and not very original, and those two crosses look terrible.

Some other logos that I don't like:

Sloth's logo progression is horrible, they had a good logo at the beginning, the same with Hellhammer:

I actually really dislike Sabaton's logo. It seems kind of bland to me.

I agree. The shoulder armor thing on the S makes it look like it has a nose or beak. Also, imo a good logo should look cool without all the shiny photoshop effects too, and it wouldn't be much left of their logo without it.

Spoiler: show
Sabaton?

Sorry for the huge size. Man that S is bad...

Also, Metalmuxxer: Belphegor's logo is unoriginal but those scribbled deathcore logos aren't?

You would be correct sir. I maintain that if aliens came down from outer space and asked you to tell them about "the 1980s," all you would have to do is show them that logo and they'd understand everything. You can pull that d out and stab someone with it.

The classic blocky Judas Priest logo was always the best.
Image
I like the Priest cross in and of itself, but having it be the T was trying a bit too hard for my taste.

Sebastian Bach's is actually quite nice. At one glance it looks a bit East-Asian, but at another glance looks a bit Middle Eastern. Minus for it also kind of looking like "Sepastian"...

Image

EDIT: Euphoria deserves a mention. Though I can't help but feel the o is simmilar to some company logo. And a tennis ball. And of course the logo, as wel as their music, may make one think of Vektor. Still a nice, creative logo. Some bands clean up their logos after a while and I can imagine the thing in the middle at the top half may go in the future for a less-is-more approach.

One of Dan Lilkers bands, Evil Wrath:

Bloody Blasphemy, though I could have done without the pentagram and some of those very thin branches:

The Bloody Blasphemy logo above strikes the perfect balance between being eye catching, conveying it's black/evilness/heaviness, and yet still being readable. I can see that logo, and immediately know what the name of the band is without guessing. Evil Wrath, on the other hand, is kind of pushing it as far as readability but it's still a good, eye popping logo.

But then you have Temnozor- I would have never guessed that was the name of the band based on that logo. Yeah it's a cool logo but... My first guess would have been "Tomifoborg" or "Temhfobors" and that was after studying it for a few minutes. HOWEVER: I guess in Russian "TEMHO3OPb" is actually correct spelling for "TEMNOZOR" since "3" is a "Z" and "P" is an R, etc. so if you are familiar with the Russian alphabet I suppose it is easier to recognize. But as for the one that Opus posted, The true...WHAT??? The true Moripoo? Mortpoy? Stortloy" I'm outta ideas.

Basically, in MY opinion anyway, a logo should be at least somewhat readable, even if it is embellished or stylized. That is just my opinion, not saying it's "right" or anything. But I like to at least be able to tell the name of the band by looking at the logo.

Always liked Anaal Nathrakh's logo but then again I'm a raging fanboy for anything they do.
Image

The Dark Funeral logo is a bit of a clusterfuck of 'Satanic' imagery but I really like it. They fit the pentagram (a burning one no less), a ram/goat's head, inverted crosses into one killer logo.
Image

Always thought Ulcerate's logo was a bit different from standard death metal logos (still edgy as fuck) much like their music.
Image

Sulphur Aeon has a very obvious Lovecraftian vibe in their logo which I like very much.

Hawkeyes. Like the design and retro-esque colour. The only thing that bothers me is that the line from the first e doesn't flow into the s but rather just hits it.

Indeed it is Sportlov. A band that takes the winter theme to the extreme with hilarious lyrics.

Not too many bands go for the Asian characters type and this band does it perfectly, I love how smooth and sober it looks, and how it looks just like a cusual Asian-esque desing at first, but when you know it says "Kekal" you can read it easily.

It can be fun with logos which at first glance looks like they are made from other alphabets but isn't. Like with Dislocation (Latvia):

Same. So clean & pristine yet so metal & badass at the same time, if that makes sense.

The Skeletonwitch logo looks pretty good to me. Plus you can inflict a nasty cut with those ridiculous edges .

Deathspell Omega's logo has some pleasing...curves (?). The inverted cross as a 't' is a nice touch too.
