Metal newbie
Full name:
Ian Woods
United States
Favourite metal genre(s):
Death / Black / Power / Doom

Rating scale/comparisons:
100: Unobtainable. Spock's Beard - Snow comes close, but that's about it.

99-90: An instant classic. Most songs will make playlists for years to come and these albums are "ambassadors" for their genres. Death - Individual Thought Patterns or Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris are good examples.

89-80: A great effort and one that will receive plenty of play from me. Therion - Theli and Immortal - Northern Sons of Darkness fit here.

79-70: A solid record with more hits than misses. Not every song is something you look forward to, but there are some absolute gems. Angra - Angels Cry and Skeletonwitch - Beyond the Permafrost are points of comparison

69-60: The majority of albums I own/have downloaded slot in around here. Each record is good for at least 3 great songs, but there might be some real missteps. Kiuas - Lustdriven and Origin - Antithesis fall under this category.

59-50: Now we start getting into the "I don't advertise I enjoy this" category of guilty pleasure/full length albums with 1-2 excellent tracks and a lot of filler. In Flames - Reroute to Remain and Conducting From The Grave - When Legends Become Dust are two of a handful of examples I keep in my library.

49-0: Various shades of unworthy. No album is completely without value, so I will never give a 0%, but I do take off points for blasphemy: Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King would normally be a 20, but due to the desecration of a band that once wrote None So Vile, it is reduced to a 10.

If you disagree with my reviews, that's fine. I'm aiming to be impartial, positive, and informative, hopefully to a degree where dissent is difficult to maintain. Once this gets going, I'll add a dedicated e-mail address for feedback.
