Born in punk rock, raised in independent college radio, matured(?) in black and death.

I worked in music promotion and DJing while in undergrad, which required capsule descriptions of music to give DJs as close an impression as possible of what they were about to hear before they pressed play. My reviews today still use that framework: describing what you might hear to inform the type of appeal gained rather than a strictly subjective good/bad. Does that sound pretentious? I don't mean it to be - I just like to put text to sound.

My favorite writing styles are early 20th century modernism and essay poetry. I try not to reflect this in my MA authorship.

Any reviewer has their heuristics and biases. Mine are in favor of death metal of all stripes, black metal (first-wave, second-wave, and experimental), underground 80s thrash metal, 80s heavy metal demos, and 2000s doom metal. They are against progressive metal, contemporary black metal, sludge metal, and war metal. I don't feel inclined one way or another for the other subgenres.

Other activities: climbing, hiking, rappelling, Spanish language studies.

I also write for Tape Wyrm. Check it out if you want to explore the obscure depths of extreme metal and dungeon synth demos/EPs/occasional LP.

Current MA project: Writing up all of the Ride for Revenge releases. No reason outside of them being one of my favorite extreme metal bands, and writing is a good excuse for exploring more.

I use the full gamut of a 0-100% scale. A 25% score has little redeeming qualities but might have some interest for collectors or completionists. A 50% score is totally listenable yet average - or a bit of a dud but with a couple exceptional cuts. A 75% is a solidly good/great release. A 100% score represents a scene or subgenre's Platonic ideal.
