Favourite metal genre(s):

The thing I look for and like in all genres of metal is skilled instrumentalism, advanced musicianship and complex song-writing. For me, a strong album needs to use powerful musical harmonies, be they positive or dreary. There is nothing wrong with being melodious, too. Bands I like the most have vocalists who are able to sing in an expressive and interesting way, and their sound has an unforgettable colour. On top of all that, the music must have balls! :-)

I like music that makes me contemplate, thus I hate repetition and pretence. A death metal act may use too many growls, distortion or anything else just to be brutal, and you can tell the band members did not even think about whether that adds any musical value or not. The same goes for some heavy metal screamers who pitch their tunes as high as possible, use tons of vibrato and yell about something they think is very heroic. Such overkill completely sucks.

I hate nu-metal for its debilitating simplification of what is supposed to be guitar music. Still, I can listen to some Soulfly and the early S.O.A.D. albums absolutely rule with their punk / thrash influence. On the other hand, KoRn and Limp Bizkit make me vomit...

In no particular order of importance, some of my most favourite bands are: Sodom, Black Sabbath, Raise Hell, Disbelief, Godgory, Therion, Godsmack, Lacuna Coil, Benediction, Death, Hypocrisy, Motorhead, Kreator, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Amorphis, Within Temptation, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Entombed, and many more...
