Fan of many diverse styles of extreme metal from black to grind to death to thrash, as well as classical, jazz, prog, experimental, and just plain strange unclassifiable music. Favorite bands include Kvist, Taake, Abigor, Obtianed Enslavement (early), Darkthrone, Deathspell Omega (later), Emperor, Leviathan (US), Weakling, Blut Aus Nord, Negura Bunget (later), Necrophagist, Goregasm, Suffocation, Nile, Death, Cynic, Atheist, Cephalic Carnage, Cryptopsy (mid-era), Vader, Coroner, Mr Bungle, Fantomas; and of course Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Sodom, and Kreator.
I do tend to rate music on the talent of the musicians who play instuments, and not care much about vocals; which definitely informs the ratings I give bands and my general tastes in extreme music (which tend towards the cerebral). Bands that play thier instuments well, write solid and interesting songs, and manage to convey feeling and emotion without words or screams I find particularly vital. I am a big sucker for new ideas and directions in metal, and am always searching for vastly alien and unique sounds in genres that spawn many more imitators than innovators. If you like vocals and find lyrics important, my reviews may mean very little to you.
