My name is Caleb, and I am a huge rock music geek. I love hard rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock. Since this is a website dedicated to heavy metal music, I will say things about it. I feel as though heavy metal is the best contemporary genre, as I believe that it has been for the last 36 years. It shows better musicianship, especially with technically and complexity. It has taught me a lot over the years, as a guitarist and as a youth, it helped me drive out my negative emotions, bringing in positive ones. I felt most positive when listening to bands such as Dream Theater, Helloween, Iron Maiden or Death (especially their work from the 1990s).

I tend to enjoy things in the melodic variety, such as the traditional style of metal, or something categorized under progressive, power, folk, gothic or epic doom. I enjoy music that is adventurous and pushes boundaries, which results in my love of progressive metal. It is a trend in the metal scene to be progressive, which has resulted in some great albums, as well as some not-so-great ones. I also enjoy music with a lot of emotion, which includes the mainly joyful feelings of power metal, the depressive and eerie ones of doom metal, or the beauty that is often found within the gothic variety. I love to dig for artists that are obscure, especially older ones. I still look through the archives and search around in other places (on the internet) for silently released albums by NWOBHM bands. I loved to play with speed on the guitar as a youth, resulting in my love of thrash (which has been making quite a comeback), as well as old-school death metal, mainly from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. I feel as though a lot of modern bands in the genre tend to focus so hard on how fast and heavy they are, that they forget about their chord progressions and sometimes even rhythm. I still have shivers run down my spine when I listen to the riffs on Slowly We Rot or Scream Bloody Gore (calm down, I like Leprosy more). I tend to have a hit or miss relationship with brutal death metal, aside from the older acts (Suffocation, Cryptopsy, early Cannibal Corpse, etc). Technical death metal seems to have a great way of using all of the music that goes on within the genre to attack the listener, which I enjoy). I also think that black metal used to have more creativity. The odd song structures of bands such as Darkthrone, Vulcano or Satyricon made their music more full of evil than anything else at the time. Many bands later in the genre have much less originality. However, in the past two years, there have been some great new bands in the genre.
