My collection is incomplete and my wanted list is old. I can't be assed to add or remove things, really.
I enjoy oldschool death metal, especially the bands that originate from Sweden and Florida. My favorite sub-genre of death metal is probably good technical death in the vein of Atheist, Cynic, Hellwitch, Death, Nocturnus, etc. I do not like new death metal because it doesn't offer much innovation, and the newest death metal release I truly enjoy is probably Cryptopsy's None So Vile, aside from the works of Nile. I love anything that's thrashy and originates from the SF Bay Area, as well as a couple of German bands. As far as black metal goes, I mostly listen to the 1st wave stuff (Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Venom, Bathory, etc.) and a few 2nd wave artists (Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor, a bit of Burzum...). I like black/thrash metal in the vein of Sodom while also enjoying some of the later bands like Absu and Aura Noir. I despise (metal) bands that don't offer anything new to the genre, which is 95% of the scene anyway. I love doom metal because it relaxes me, especially the older bands. I also like groove metal in the vein of Pantera, Exhorder, Machine Head, mid-career Sepultura and so forth (although I do prefer Sepultura's death/thrash period). I despise power metal. Metal was never meant to be that melodic and it was never meant to be happy. I like good progressive metal as long as it isn't technical for the sake of being technical. I despise guitar wankery as a genre.
Apart from metal, I also love progressive rock, jazz fusion, stoner rock and classical, while occasionally enjoying a myriad of other genres.
In short, I will listen to anything that's innovative and fresh as well as pleasing to the ears, naturally. I strongly criticise hypocrisy in music and cannot listen to bands that I know are in it for the money, bands that re-invented themselves and revised their ideals (i.e. Machine Head) are fine by my book, however bands that make music to this day only to get money are not.
