So I got bored one day, and I started combining random key words in the "Advanced Search" section of this website. Eventually I tried combining "anime" and "black metal". After finding some garbage bands like I expected, I came across o(≧∀≦)o, and to say their name intrigued me would be accurate. I mean how the hell am I supposed to pronounce that name!? Anyway, I checked them out and they actually ended up being tolerable. Hell I even enjoy it!
This entire EP is insanely short, like it's only about 7 minutes long. I mean that's the average length of a single black metal song. So i'll try my best to figure out how to tell you about everything that's going on in this. I'll just start with the overall production. This album sounds pretty good. It's got that early 90's atmospheric black metal sound. I wish it was a bit more polished, but it doesn't feel messy. my only real complaint is that the bass drum can be very hard to hear at times, but due to how good everything sounds I can ignore it. One thing I really like is the weird choir on the track "Lillium". It's super operatic and has a depressive black metal kind of feel. It's super cool and when I first heard it I was thrown back.
Guitars and Vocals! That seems like the next thing to talk about indeed. The guitar tone on this EP is really good. It's got that deathcrush kinda feel, yet it also reminds me a bit of early Behemoth, and I love Behemoth! So yeah the guitar tone is super cool. The track I think the tone works best on is "In Dark Woods She Wails". It's a great track and It kinda reminds me of Thy Light in a way. So yeah the guitar tone is pretty great. Now I think I should talk about the vocals. I'd do another paragraph about them but honestly I don't think I could really write a whole paragraph on them. They are really cool though. The vocalist really sounds like a ghost and it fits the overall atmosphere very well! I'm sure that there is a word for what exactly the vocalist is doing, however I don't know much about black metal vocals so I wouldn't know. It's a very raspy scream that I think has a little distortion added, but I don't know exactly what to call it.
Overall, this EP is quite alright. I really want to give it a higher score but it feels too premature to do so. If there were more tracks on this I'd feel better about giving it a higher score, but for now I think that giving this EP a 72% is pretty fair. But most importantly, do I like it? Well of course, I mean I just said I did. It's a great EP and my only real complaint is that it is so short. I'd love to hear what o(≧∀≦)o has it offer in the future and I will be waiting for the day this band releases a full length album.
