Yyrkoon - Dying Sun

Second album and a good one. - 83%

ThePKH, February 26th, 2003

The wheels of progression turning and turning. The debut album Oniric Transition was a nice piece of black metal influenced thrash metal. Name of the game with Dying Sun is quite similar to what it was on the first album but the black influences are very few and there are quite alot hints from the more melodic styles of metal, mostly in the clean vocal melodies.

While there is nothing completely new in Yyrkoon's style I still would like to say that this album has some personal touch. The growled vocals are quite average stuff but the melodic ones are tasty and don't excactly remind me of any other band. The thrashy riffs and melodic keyboard parts are balanced well, focus is on the riffs of course.

I think fans of melodic thrash metal should like songs like Crystal Light and Gods of Silver while power metal fans who don't diss the growls would enjoy Screamer and The Clans. However, people who like both styles will enjoy this most.
I rated this album quite high for some months after it was released but the time steals a little bit of the effect. Dying Sun is still a good release and worth the price of it.
