Yeast Infection - Just Ain't Right

Good ... but no Generation of Hate - 67%

earthwormgaz, January 4th, 2007

I got this CD purely on the strength of the fact that "Generation of Hate" by Dismembered Foetus, the singers former band, was a cracker. (Yeast Infection also share the bassist with that band.)

So, this CD would always have to either blow my head off in a surprising departure from the GOH sound, giving me something different, or try to take it head on. The latter is the closer to how this CD hit me. It sounds very much like GOH.

Whereas GOF featured maybe 5 or 6 killer tracks and a great deal of filler, "Just Ain't Right" offers 10 tracks, a few of which stand out on first listening. There are good riffs in there, but none that smacked me about like those found on Ace's previous full length.

Compounding the problems, the production is nowhere near as good.

That said, on its own merits, its not a bad release. There are good riffs here, and Ace does have a cracking, varied scream, both of these positives manage to cut through any production problems at several points in the listen.

The CD also features a smattering of samples (one of note from the film Falling Down) which adds to the atmosphere. Artwork is suitably lo-fi and sick.

All in all, if you can get one of the 500 copies kicking around on the cheap (as I did), then you could do worse than buy it.
