Yazata - Reh-0311

An Excellent Rehearsal Tape - 83%

analog_winter, July 8th, 2011

Let me start off by saying that this is a super DIY release. The tape itself was from a book on tape, and was recorded over by the band. This combined with the minimalist black and white j-card give off a very DIY feel.

This tape features three live rehearsal tracks of atmospheric, doomy black metal. The riffs on this tape range from more standard tremolo picked black metal riffs, to slower, almost groovy doom riffs, to soft atmospheric riffs. The riffs are competently written, executed well, and overall are pretty awesome. However, at times the guitar becomes too muddy and hard to decipher. But because this is a rehearsal tape that can be somewhat expected. Even so, the riffs create a very good atmosphere that envelops you. It’s not hard to get lost in this music, and that’s a very good quality.

For the most part, the bass follows the guitar, but it still retains its own presence and provides a good backbone. The drums are also fairly standard, providing a good steady beat, but not going to far out of the ordinary. The fact that the drums are somewhat low in the mix hampers them to a certain extent. The vocals are interesting, they are somewhat low in the mix, and have a very distant vibe, kind of like voices howling out from the desert.

I must say that overall this demo is quite good. I think that as Yazata hones their style of desert-influenced doomy black metal, they could release some top-notch material in the underground.
