By now Wombbath should not require introduction but they are unleashing their 4th album via Soulseller Records on March 6th and below are my thoughts.
Crusty d-beat riffs and punctual drums grind in a savage and visceral blend of extremity that hooks gruesomely into your flesh from the off. I have always adored the HM-2 tone so that is a very welcome and integral part of the sound as the band chug out a rancid spew to back up that of the vocalist with some excellent Swedeath style violence ensuing. The fleshy domain is brought to the listener by grimy rhythmic assaults and soaring leads in the vein of Dismember and Entombed back in their heydays, while the ferocious drums add some really killer hooks to the meaty onslaught, as does the vocalists raspy snarls.
With quite a few notably great releases in this style recently (most notably Feral’s last full length), it may not be the most unique approach to death metal but who cares when it is this crushingly excellent? The buzzsaw riffs never lose their ability to deliver a cutting edge to classic death metal, sadly sometimes bands rely too heavily on the pedal choice but Wombbath clearly have the ideas to back up such a decimating tone.
Hideously pungent with a riveting mixture of blast-beats, mid-tempo groove and d-beat breaks, this album will have you headbanging and stomping along to its chaotically marvellous brand of death metal destruction time and time again. The occasional doomy breaks add atmospherics to the record while overall the more vitriolic aggression takes the foreground, which works brilliantly. Definitely worth a listen for all the Swedeath lovers of morbid metal majesty.
