Wicked Inquisition is an up and coming doom metal band hailing from the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. The band is headed by guitarist and vocalist, Nate Towle, along with drummer, Ben Ackerman, and bassist, Jordan Anderson. So far the band has received very positive feedback from the doom metal community around the world. Their videos on youtube have usually been related to videos of Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General, Budgie, and Pentagram.
The Self Made Tomb EP was released in 2010 to an unsuspecting doom metal internet audience. Nate Towle played all of the instruments himself on the EP, and even still it is as tight as your normal four piece stoner doom band. The title track starts off this EP with a standard mid-tempo doom rocker in the vein of Wino era Saint Vitus. One thing you must understand about this EP, Wicked Inquisition is highly influenced by Wino Weinreich, so much of the EP sounds a lot like some of Wino's past bands. That being said, Wicked Inquisition has done a great job with this style. The next song is "Sun Flight" which unleashes itself upon you with a riff like no other. The opening riff reminds me of a mixture of Spirit Caravan and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath era Sabbath, and what a riff it is! the vocals work perfectly with this song, simple and in perfect pitch. The last track on the EP is the faster-paced "You're on Smack." This track sounds exactly like a lost Obsessed track. Nate's vocals even sound more hauntingly like Wino's.
Overall the album gets the rating of 85%. I like all the tracks on the album, however, I feel that Wicked Inquisition could have put a little bit more into this EP. The quality is very good given that it was recorded on nothing but a two-bit computer mike on the Audacity recording program. The songs all flow well together, however I feel that they were just too short, only hailing around 2-4 minutes each. It's a great EP and hopefully we will be seeing a full-length from the Inquisition soon.
