Weekend Nachos - Unforgivable

Very special album here... - 85%

I came across Weekend Nachos by chance surfing the web and was attracted by the sheer hilariousness of their name. What I found however was far from hilarious. What I found was a potent mix of crust punk, grindcore, and sludge metal. And the brutal album cover of the decapitated head just lying on some dirty street side is enough to grab anyone's attention by itself.

The entire album comes together as a well combined effort by all band members to take their unique influences and meld them together into something unique in by itself. Songs often change their tempo throughout the songs, alternating between furious hardcore/grindcore intensity and halting to a screeching stop to creep into a slow thick heavy doom/sludge riff. The sludge riffs come in especially strong as they owe a lot of their influence from the sludge masters themselves, Eyehategod. As with most sludge bands, the vocals are not your standard metal vocals but the singer's own nihilistic interpretation of pain and suffering (in other words a healthy mix of Black Flag meets Crowbar). The lyrics also fit the bill with the whole nihilism theme. The song titles give you more than enough insight into the grim topics explored by their singer (ex. Shot in the Head, Reason to Die, Rejected Psychopath, etc.).

While the songs don't drastically sound that different from one another, the songs that they do push to you all sound great. One of the most unique sounding bands out there and a good listen for those who can appreciate the mingling of eclectic influences into metal music.
