Wartime - Entrapment

German-sounding tech-thrash - 73%

UltraBoris, May 5th, 2004

You know the band Flaming Anger? Of course not. No one does. Anyway, these guys sound exactly like them... meaning that a comparison to middle-era Death isn't too far off, except these guys have the Slavic-accented somewhat harsh (but not nearly as much as Chuck) vocals thing going on, and the production is a bit lacking, and the riffs are generally far thrashier... when all is said and done, a promising work by this band. Classic interlude-filled tech thrash, with a heavy Destruction vibe in the overt thrash riffs, meets the bass work and overall composition of middle-Death.

The songs vary a lot in small intervals of time... I can't think of a single passage that maintains the same riff base for more than about 20 seconds. Similarly to Individual Thought Patterns, there are a lot of sections with prominent bass and lead guitar, and every once in a while a really brilliant riffage interlude, like the middle part of Entrapment of Time, with the insane "it's all the same...." vocals. Total Watchtower worship at times, except maybe without the shrieky vocals.

The highlight of the album is the song Atomic Bomb Dome, with its "riding the wind on a stormy night..." classic opening riff (after the little intro solo section), combined with the staple technical-metal chorus of a slow vocals over oddly timed riffs, and then the fast section with the random Helloween style solo. I kid you not, I hear - between Death/Watchtower riffs - the solo from Before the War. Then throw in a textbook thrash middle break that reminds me of some Destruction or Sodom work. Well-executed stuff; in fact the entire album is.

Recommended. I can't, unfortunately, find where to download this album from... I remember it being on the band's website or something. If you can find it, keep it.
