It’s about time for another album from this Hellhammering German beast! So what could you expect from a 2009 Warhammer album, composed by a band member that was born back when Celtic Frost already sucked? No matter what your expectations could be, one thing is obvious – this album is not a disappointment for those who like Warhammer’s music so far! If you seek for some originality – go somewhere else, since the riffs still sound 666% Hellhammer-inspired!
The album has a good sound quality, but it also has a dark and morbid atmosphere as well. Volker’s lyrics are mostly either re-arranged Hellhammer lyrics, or even Warhammer’s older stuff! Even the pretty much “personal” lyrics of “Total Maniac” is half personally statement against nowadays Thrashers and half re-arranged Hellhammer’s “Maniac”! Sounds like a recycle? I would say it is, but it’s well done, as only Warhammer could (re)do it, contrary to countless Slayer/Darkthrone/Burzum clones that in most of the cases sound mega-pathetic.
The only significant change different between this album and Warhammer’s older stuff I’ve noticed here is the heavy as fuck guitar sound, which somehow reminds me of Satanic Rites, which is on the one hand great, and on the other hand not really surprising, haha! There’s also a cool solo of some guest guitar player. Overall – Warhammer continues to honor Hellhammer, mostly the more doomy side of their music, and they’re doing it great, with total devotion. Give it a try, or fuckin’ die!
