I am scared! Having just listened to Victim One Agony from start to finish I can definately say that I am scared. This is not a recommended album if you are a girl on her own at home for the weekend, like me this weekend.
Vonn has struck that balance between music and terror that you don't often find in music. I agree with what I have seen in a review here already, that this album is like the aural equivalent of some kind of extreme horror movie where no one gets out alive. The album fades in with an eerie industrial sample and is gradually overpowered by the most heavy and sick guitar sound I have ever heard. I am thinking of a guitar sound to compare it to, but nothing comes to mind. Especially when there is a muted chord, muted just enough that part of it remains almost in the subconscious, when that happens it is sheer evil genius on the behalf of the guitar player from Vonn - whoever he is, because this band keeps its identity under wraps, something that adds to the mystery of this dark and enigmatic group of people. The vocal element, the screams, never stop for a minute throughout over one hour of horrific music while the industrial samples lay subliminally in the backround, coming out every once in a while to add an extra dimension to everything.
This is a very unique album in every way, not just from its collossal guitar sound that I could go on and on and on about. The blend of everything together, how everything fades in to come together in one horrifying hour and fifteen minutes, the industrial elements, the vocals, this is an amazing piece of work. The end is 'executed' perfectly (hope you like my choice of the words there, hehe) and again the guitar is perfectly timed to meet the climax of the album, from quiet to a building type of feedback to grotesque horror to the final creepy musical squeals to DEAD!
As a huge fan of all types of doom metal Victim One Agony has struck me as the most genius work in that genre for many, many years.
COME AND PLAY A SHOW IN GERMANY VONN!!!
What an amazing album! Soundwise this starts off with the screams of a woman fading in and in the background many strange, creepy, industrial-type noises. Then the guitar seeps in and holy shit does that sound evil! The whole guitar sound is like an explosion of torturous proportions and is highly unique when intermingled with the screaming vocals and the evil background noise.
About 30minutes into the piece a weird 'lead' fades in that is totally, utterly fucking sick, dragging you into your worst and most dreaded nightmare before fading out again and leaving the remainder of the album comprising of the slow, sludgy, evil guitar sound droning over the screams of the tortured victim.
I love the final few minutes of this release especially, when everything seems to get a little quiter before gradually growing again in the most torturous eruption of pure doomed evil that I have ever heard.
At 76 minutes long this is a tough album to get through from start to finish, considering just how unrelentingly heavy and evil it is. But it is really like sitting through a sickeningly scary horror movie with only the pictures in your head to put images to the accompanying music.
This is a amazingly original album that offers a unique take on the whole doom metal ethos. Definately the most extreme doom metal band on the planet as it says on this page. At least I have never heard a band so extreme, and I have a lot of extreme shit in my collection.
