Vomitheist - Graveyard Flesh Orgy - 90%

There are two ways to look at bands like Vomitheist: You would be forgiven to think that the world does not need another HM2 driven album hailing at the altar of mighty acts like Entombed or Grave. Or you are like me, always happily taking notice whenever a new and unknown band steps out of the crypt and deliver their take on the genre in energetic and refreshing manner. The first demo by this Swiss chainsaw commando “Graveyard Flesh Orgy” is not going to win any prices for innovation, but these lads surely know what they are doing and how to get the corpses swinging to the beat.

While old-school, throwback death metal is always fun, it can sometimes be a little trite, since the throwback thing is done so much. That being said Vomitheist always pack an awesome punch that leaves nothing to be desired. Their style is simple but effective, straight to the point but with enough variation and some clever placed solos and tempo changes to keep the flow over the whole playing time. This EP only lasts 20 minutes, but it is packed with some killer material.

Their style feels a bit rawer as they take a very gnarly and less-polished approach compared to some of their peers. Similar to e.g. the latest albums by Feral or Bastard Grave the sound is even filthier and nastier than on most other records having been released in that particular sub-genre. That being said there are great hooks and melodic elements that have been implemented in the background, building a great counterpart to the relentless riff attacks. The drumming is tight and the growling also does not leave anything to be desired.

The tempo is kept within the mid-tempo region for the most part with a few well-placed groovier parts. Those slower sections as well as some darker sounding harmonies are great for building a sinister atmosphere. Overall the tracks here are straight to the point and easy to enjoy. This does not mean that the songwriting is too simplistic, as there are a few twists and turns, but in the end you can just throw the disc into the player and get going.

The production is raw yet transparent. For a first effort this EP sounds surprisingly great. Of course the main star here is the buzz-sawing guitar tone, but the more melodic elements have not been buried in the mix. “Graveyard Flesh Orgy” is available as CD as well, coming with a nice old school cover artwork. So in case you are a fan of this sub-genre and always on the look for new bands you owe it to yourself to give this one a look.
