The Swedish death metal machinery keeps producing great bands that vie furiously with their counterparts across the pond. This type of competition contributes to yield amazing new albums full of creativity and fresh ideas. And referring to what's being said, Volturyon is another beast in the Swedish death metal market. Even though the band was formed in 2005 under a different name, the members have enough experience in the metal music industry, They are not fresh of the boat type of bands. These guys managed to find a chemistry to bond together in a little time unleashing their first poison a few years later titled Blood cure.
As I stated in my introduction, the band has recently formed but their first full length was one hell of a monstrous death metal album. The songwriting here focuses on the productivity of both guitars and drums, but the vocals seem to have some good potential as well. And speaking of the vocals work, I can say that Olle Ekman delivers great growls that I thought they were thoroughly deep and vicious. Besides that, the backing vocals seem raspy and sound very hateful adding-up some occasional screams. The guitars are quite technical with some fast riffs and well built spooky solos like in the tracks Blood cure and Phantasm. The bass lines leave a brutal touch and a barbarous feeling in the music. The drums are mainly fast paced with blast beats, occasional technical patterns, and some double-pedals here and there.
Phantasm? Forever Suffering? Addicted To Cadaverine? Well, the theme of these lyrics is not my type. However, skimming through them and hearing every time nasty sick and sadistic lines really sounded to me like I'm hearing a goregrind band. That’s shall be admirable to the fans of this kind of themes, mainly those that are fond of the grind/gore music.
Anyways, the main deal here is the good musicianship these guys offer, and the consistency of the album, because I can’t find a bad song here. This is a very good death metal release with healthy chunks of technical and brutal influences. They should continue on this path and maybe change the lyrical themes because they look just too dumb for a good death metal band like Volturyon. Purchase Blood cure and give it a try. This will appeal to you if you are a death metal fan. Grind/Gore fanatics will find themselves in this debut album, too.
Standouts: Invert Birth, Unorthodox Spawn Deleted, Initiate the Killing, Drenched in Human Sludge.
