Viking Crown - Innocence from Hell

Evil as hell - 75%

KArmakeddon, October 31st, 2004

For those of you who don't know yet, this band is a black metal project lead by Anton Crowley, better known as Phil Anselmo of Pantera fame. Very different than other projects of Phil, Viking Crown is playing raw and effectively horrific black metal. There are 2 things you should know about Viking Crown albums: horrible sound and primitive production. Viking Crown released 3 albums and if you want to buy one i would recommend only this one. Why?
Because it has the most accessible sound of the three. Even the songs are not that bad!!! Regarding the content of the album, well, we have 11 songs and 38 minutes of music. The songs are very diversified and we have old school grim black metal like the one Mayhem did like 15 years ago, the Deathcrush era, meaning 2-3 minutes of fast drumming, retro-thrash riffs and sick vocals sounding like the devil himself singing. Some songs have a slow and mid-tempo sounding more like Darkthrone for instance. And we have also some instrumental tracks, only keyboard, very ambiental but also very dark and scarry.
In conclusion i can say this is the best Viking Crown album, and though i expected more from Anton Crowley, it is a decent album. If you want old grim and cold norwegian black metal played by an american band and if you want to hear music coming directly from hell this album awaits you.
