Concerning War Frozen... - 84%

thejoker, August 18th, 2011

War Frozen, yet another new legion on Unblack Metal Scene, plays grim, battle-hardened black metal in the vein of Dark Funeral and Marduk. As this is the War Frozen artist page, I'll skip over Vials of Wrath and review them on their own page.

This is a speedfreak's dream - continual blastbeats assault the listener over the three tracks, and show Christhammer's considerable skill behind the drum kit. All three tracks boast a very heavy Dark Funeral influence, circa "The Secrets of the Black Arts" (arguably their best album by far). There are bits of keyboard-atmosphere in the background, and the guitars rage and flow over the psychotic blasting. Christhammer's vocals sound very similar as well to Themgoroth's on that particular release.

This is not to say that the album is a rip-off of Dark Funeral - it's just very faithful in sound to Dark Funeral's trademark ability to blend melodic riffing with extreme speed. Personally, I like this guy's work better - it's colder in sound, and manages to be brutal as hell without succumbing to a lot of the trappings of black/death hybrids. Make no mistake, this is pure black metal, played with a vengeance.

All in all, an extremely promising glimpse of what may yet hopefully come from this one-man outfit.
