Verdorben - Demo 2

Formless and flowless - 40%

Zodijackyl, August 8th, 2012

Verdorben take the Zarach 'Baal' Tharagh approach on this demo - get the drum machine clicking away and start playing guitar over it. If it's good, keep it. If there are some cool parts in there that could be refined into something great, keep it. If it's not very good, keep it. The production literally jumps in and out of audibility, which could be uncontrolled auto-adjusting, someone bumping a microphone during recording, a colossal mixing fuckup, or the recording equipment disagreeing with the weather, which is unlikely as this doesn't sound like it was recorded outdoors.

There are some really cool ideas here, some neat guitar riffs, and the closest thing raw black metal has to leads. Unfortunately, they're all mixed in with ideas that aren't very good, and neither the songs nor the demo as a whole have any hint of attention given to structuring it to highlight those. The whole thing seems to reflect that very little effort was put into anything other than coming up with some cool ideas - the production is terrible, the songs are formless, a minute or five minutes of ideas thrown together, the drum machine never adjusted to help progress the songs or accent the guitars. The vocals are sort of there, occasionally in the background and occasionally in the front, completely forgettable and not really utilized to do anything for the music.

Black metal often becomes a blur, where the music blends seamlessly to become a whole, combining several performances into one sound that encompasses, melody, rhythm, and atmosphere. This black metal simply becomes a blur of half-assed ideas sequenced together with some neat guitar riffs thrown into the mix. It has a bit of a punkish feel, where the guitar can wander when it's not the driving force, noodling and widdling, unfortunately getting too sidetracked and leaving the music without a driving force. This demo is forgettable and disappointing as hints of potential are sprinkled through out just enough to string you along through a disappointing supporting cast.
