Verdelger - De Bremer stads muzikanten

The Wolf Is Wounded - 79%

thejoker, September 24th, 2011

After the ripping fury of "In Het Nolst Van De Zwarte Nacht", Verdelger seems to have returned on this single limping. The rabid wolf is still alive, but it is wounded from its own assaults on the listener on the demo prior, and now seems a little - well, understated.

Lord Swordfather is now alone, bereft of all other musicians, and left to record this fairly lengthy single all alone. What results? A rather quiet and tired, yet still kicking, Verdelger.

"Da Bremer Stads Muzikanten" begins with a very odd acoustic intro, tinny and out of place, before descending into a chracteristic musical attack on the senses. The problem here is that the music is more frantic in the sense that it sounds like it's trying to lash out, but just can't quite cut it. The drums roll and shuffle about instead of go off like barbaric war drums intermingled with cracking gun shots, and the guitars seem toned down to a lo-fi buzz. Vocals are still nasty and snarling, but not berserk like on previous material.

This is not to say that the song is bad by any means, but compared to the material on "In Het Holst Van De Zwarte Nacht", this single comes off a little weak and limpid. Lord Swordfather would carry on this kind of sound on to Borgazur's first demo, before going all out progressive and technical on their first full-length. As it is, if you're a fan of Verdelger, you take what you can get.
