Unpersons - III

Three Persons - 50%

UCTYKAH, March 22nd, 2022

Good musicians and all, but they just dwell too much on formal experiments to leave something truly substantial behind. While we're not talking anything too far out that might approach something like Orthrelm with its scope of histrionics, these guys indeed sound like a sludge band attempting to run themselves through a mathcore blender in the most painful a way possible, with as many rhythm changes and atonalities as they can fabricate and immediately hurl, also making me think of 90's metalcore being slapped upside the head with an "avant" prefix that no one quite knows what to do with. "The Actor" is the only track where Unpersons actually settle on something one can call a composition, and it's a pretty good one too. Too bad it ain't matched up by anything else on the album, even on its latter part, where a string of longer, more sustained tracks is assumed to make up for a barrage of experimental sketches thrown at you from the start. At the end, "III" is really a case of a band trying way too hard to stay outside the box and, well, in the process just breaking the proverbial box or missing it altogether or...you can finish the sentence any way you like, really.
