According to an interview with Jeff White, Tyrannicide was never really accepted within the thrash scene in the 80's. Why this is, I don't know, as the music on this demo isn't bad at all. Maybe Jeff White was a prick or something, or people disliked his sometimes cheesy lyrics about non violent social change, I don't know. At any rate, I guess it doesn't really matter,
considering these guys never became uber famous or anything after the fact.
The best thing about this demo is that it shows the band had potential. Some of the songs are really well done, with a few riffs coming close to(insert your favorite 80's thrash band here) in terms of headbang-ability. Not the whole thing is like this, or else they would be more famous than they are. Another thing I liked was the vocals. They are pretty standard vocals for a thrash
band, but this is good. The vocalist seems to know his limitations and doesn't try to do things he can't do very well. A final note to mention is the bass. While it is not comparable with any of the truly great bassists, there are some nifty fills here and there.
As with all demos, there are some bad things as well. The biggest thing is some of the solos sound choppy, meaning that they seem to be missing notes or something. Maybe they were written this way, but if they were, I would call it odd songwriting. A second part that was subpar was the slower parts utilized from time to time. They almost always are ackwardly done, and a couple sound like something off a hardcore album.
The recording is a demo, but fairly well done. Every instrument can be heard throughout for the most part. The only exceptions to this is the fact the bass fades in and out occasionally. In fact, this recording is on par with some underground shit labels I've come across.
To sum up this review, while said release is a decent example of 80's thrash, nothing on it really stands out to qualify these guys as a great band. I would recommend it to people who just can't get enough classic thrash. Otherwise, it really is not worth the time to track down.
