Tyrant (UK) - Demo '81

1. Shadows of the Night 3:58
2. Take it to the Dragon 6:24
3. We've Surrendered 5:10
4. For You 5:04
5. Clash of Titans 4:24
6. Captured 4:03

NWOBHM demo time again. I don’t know much about Tyrants details – so I’ll stick to the music.

The demo itself is reasonably well produced and Tyrant have a real mid 80’s Euro-metal feel to them on a couple of these tracks – a sound not unlike SADO - except they preceded these bands by a few years. ‘Shadows of the Night’ and ‘Captured’ are the pick of the bunch of these six songs. The guitar and vocal work on both is excellent, the rough sounding vocals really blending with the riffs. The guitar sound itself is nice – trebly and overdriven and good for the time.

I have to say that the tracks in the middle though leave a bit to be desired. Except for length of each one!

“Take it to the Dragon” is a ‘power-ballad type deal. And intimately 6 minutes 24 seconds too long.

“We've Surrendered” - has some good riffs, but doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Again though, the guitar and vocals are top here. At over 5 minutes it just meanders into plodding run of the mill NWOBHM.

“For You’ / ‘Clash of Titans’ are just not good songs. Simple as that.

So I’d only recommend 2 and a half songs out of six. Not great I know.

Still, I guess the only time you’ll come across any of these tracks is through file-share or mp3 downloading. If you ever do so, I’d get tracks 1 and 6 and pretend it’s a 7” single if I were you.
