Typhon - Eternal Scorn

Great Listen From This EP - 82%

crazypaean999, March 8th, 2010

To start off, I had a bit of an early prediction of how this EP was going to sound. I was expecting something kind of generic, just a recording to express anger and rebellious thoughts like I've seen quite often previously. I didn't expect much musical amazement, just kind of a straight forward, in your face kind of sound.

I started by putting on "Prelude To An Era Of Hate". When I read 'prelude', I expected some sort of piano/keyboard intro, mixed with a bunch of ambient sounds and voices. Boy, was I wrong. The song started off strong, The drums were surprisingly consistent throughout the entire song. The vocals were a great in-between of harsh and decipherable; picking out lyrics wasn't as hard as I planned. The guitar stayed away from straight power chords, which was nice. Once the solo arrived, the first note took me by surprise. I've been overwhelmed with so many black metal bands having no solos! And this one, being a guitar player myself, didn't leave me disappointed. This song definitely caught my attention and managed to hold it the whole way through.

The second and final song I listened to, "Eternal Scorn", starts off stronger in my opinion, and throughout the whole song seems to be more aggressive than the previous track. The double bass really stands out in this one, and somehow, I keep thinking I'm hearing a keyboard in the mix somewhere, even though I know there isn't. This song isn't as eye-catching as the other track, which I expected to be the other way around, since this is the title track. I personally really like "Prelude To An Era Of Hate" a lot.

Overall, this EP shows a lot of potential for a full length album in the future. I couldn't suggest changing anything about it; that would take away the individuality of it all. I would gladly add this one to my collection, and suggest it to friends.
