Typhon hail from Greece, a country where a scene has once been glorious and uprising but also one that has been dwindling down the spiral of oblivion for far too long.
This band belongs to a strong force of new Hellenic bands that harks back to these glorious days I mentioned before - a new breed of extreme metal bands who not only take off their blinkers that neglected the past, but also incorporate more modern elements without coming off as pretentious or boring.
Typhon's music shows a strong affinity to bands like Varathron and Kawir in the earlier stages of their careers. There's a lot of Hellenic black metal riffing here, aka a strong oldschool heavy metal influence, combined with blazing tremolo-picked riffs and a strong thrash influence.
Another interesting aspect of Typhon's music is the interplay between the two different vocal styles; we have a typical, but well executed harsh growl on one side and some rather mournful clean vocals on the other. Both styles are utilized in the right moments and work together very well, effectively enhancing the dense atmosphere of this record.
It's hard to pick favourites, as all songs are very enjoyable but if I had to choose, it'd be "The Silent Winter" and "Where There Is Life" as they both have some highly memorable riffs and intense atmospheric moments.
Recommended to any fan of quality black metal.
