Turisas - SuperNOT - 10%

Evvilspoon2, November 28th, 2010

Having been a great Turisas enthusiast since the first release, I was looking forward for this single, especially since their last album has been released over three years ago. Just like the ‘Rasputin’ single this one involves a cover of a classic song. Sounds good, right?

Unfortunately that’s not the case. With ‘Rasputin’ they hit the right spot; Turisas covered an originally boring disco song and made it into a folk metal hit.
They must have thought ‘ If we can do it once, we can do it twice’. So there’s ‘Supernaut’. A cover of a big Black Sabbath hit from the 70’s. Now here’s the problem; the only thing Turisas added to the original song, is the singing of the main melody and changing a guitar solo a bit. Other than this the song is exactly the same as the original. Even the vocals are nothing original.

Turisas is know as an explosive live act with great musicians who managed to write songs that combine heavy metal with epic and folky elements. If you’ve heard anything of Turisas before, this release is a complete letdown. Actually, even when you haven’t heard anything of them before, it still must be a total disappointment.

To be fair, there’s nothing wrong with the musicians in this case, they’ve proved that in their previous releases. This is a good example of a very bad song choice for a single. To be honest, I even get the idea this might have been a mandatory release, since a new album is still far away. Just to keep the fans happy. Well, sorry guys, mission failed.
