Tuol Sleng - Culling the Seed

The Groove Is Real - 86%

Despite being almost wiped off the face of the planet following the band's forced transition from Tuol Sleng to Scum Sedition, Culling The Seed still exists, and I think that every fan of death metal should at least give it a try, simply because of how well it executes a minimalist/groovy approach, similar to Bolt Thrower's Realm of Chaos aesthetically but far more related to bands such as Mortician and Fluids. Culling The Seed is a perfect example of gross death metal, but it has a twist that sets it apart from countless other bdm/goregrind demos out there, simply because it sounds much cleaner than your average release, but grooves just as intensely, with immense chugging riffs tuned in G.

Of course, little melody or dramatic songwriting is to be found here, as the main appeal is just pure brutality, and honestly I love the gritty feeling of this demo. The only real point of criticism for this demo is the lack of deviation in the music. Each song mostly revolves around one riff, and does little to progress or show alternating musical patterns, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing. The production is bare bones, with no noticeable reverb or effects, which gives the demo quite a stripped down sound that fits the very grimy, droning atmosphere. If you're into something with more energy, or more progressive music, this definitely isn't for you, but the sludgy, crushing rhythm would be any death metal fan's wet dream.
