Tsatthoggua - We Are God

Almost entirely inspired by Marduk - 70%

Colonel Para Bellum, January 10th, 2025
Written based on this version: 2024, Digital, Osmose Productions (Bandcamp)

These German perverts managed to be revived with the original line-up after 26 years. If the "Hosanna Bizarre" debut was a chaotic and intriguing mixture of styles and moves, and in its turn "Trans Cunt Whip" turned out to be a fun medley of Impaled Nazarene and Marduk, then "We Are God" is almost entirely inspired by Marduk. It features both the merciless blastbeat pummel and tremolo-picked dynamics by Swedes.

Undoubtedly, Tsatthoggua retained over the years a keen interest in old-school Swedish black metal. As for the peculiar to Tsatthoggua tenebrous black/thrash metal rampage in the vein of Sadistik Exekution, Bestial Mockery, and so on, it is a rarity on the new work ('Vorwärts Vernichter' and 'Gloria Extasia'). For this reason the latest 'Pechmarie', which is completely sustained in the Tsatthoggua old style, is alien to the album. And not only in style, but also in sound.

'I Drive My Dogs (to Thule)' and 'We Are God' also stand out from the rest, both songs are based on a triumphant and threatening mid-paced groove, and the title track does not even contain acceleration. But these are also in the vein of Marduk, who have a slow groovy piece on almost every album.

And lastly, this time Northwind's vocals are not similar to either Proscriptor McGovern ("Hosanna Bizarre") or Mika Luttinen ("Trans Cunt Whip"), it is similar to Mortuus. Northwind just doesn't fire off his lyrics. Well, cloning can hardly be called a successful comeback, but maybe the new album will please old fans.
