Thy Legion - Proclaimer of Chaos

When the Demons come in Legions to Bring Forth Ch - 83%

Carnivean, November 3rd, 2008

Heralding the Deity’s name with Pride, Thy Legion's "Proclaimer of Chaos" is a Hell-Packed essence of what the album states: Chaos. The bands debut release kicks forth (literally) a promising attitude for its future.

The album cover shows a merging between a cloudy sky and what seems like a shrouded figure with one arm outstretched forward as if guiding some uncanny horde toward an imminent level of damnation along with an eerie array of buildings which seem abandoned and desolate with a "river of skulls." All in a dark blue hue which is unusual for such bands which motivated the listener to commence his listening of the cd itself...

The first track is called Rise of legion which is a ambient sound based intro which involves twisted voices exclaiming sounds of suffering and uttering phrases with seemingly unknown language(s) (although one notices the words Lucifer Devil and Flesh quite clearly) which merges perfectly with the second track called the final day of reckoning. This track can describe the pros and quos for the whole album.

Talking in musical terms, the album is wonderful a masterpiece of which a few like so can be heard nowadays, proudly holding the flag of old schools tunes. The ensemble of screeches and growls from two different vocalists shows an impressive and yet not so common feat. The album shows a good fast flow in the tracks and the sounds clearly symbolises a war-like attitude.

Even the snare shows a machine gun-like effect, and not in a good sense, and that because there’s the horrific hint of a rather shitty drum machine showing rather excessive speed in points example in the third track and a level of dryness on the drum ensemble. The vocals are often quite dry themselves, in my perception lacking a fuller sound and it seems that one or both vocalists shows a particular suffering in performing certain high pitch vocals and in other instances, they show lack of vocal coordination, but I liked that and assuming that it's part of the chaotic theme, it was a good feat.

Like I said the album flows very well and curiosity roused me to read the lyrics on the booklet...and I was wrong about my first though, it's not all about war, but each track is rather an elaboration of the particular song's title with particular striking phrases like "The cosmos ends, myriad new ones are born and die and I have not even yet commenced my time here..."

Ultimately I recommend this CD for who like the "young" bands with strong old school riffing and to whom considers him a decent metal-head. Not to mention that this one of the best releases for the last 2-3 years.
