Thus Defiled - Through the Impure Veil of Dawn

A great death/black amalgem - 91%

THRASHERik, March 17th, 2011

Already a decade and a half old, this debut album from Thus Defiled has definitely stood the test of time. The blasphemous combination of death and black metal these Brits presented sounds as impressive today as it did in the mid-nineties. At the time of it's release "Through the impure veil of dawn" hardly received any recognition, because of the tiny label it was released on and because, well, it wasn't Norwegian.

A big shame if you ask me, because this album is one of the darkest and most aggressive CD's of the second wave of black metal. The music is a really brutal blend of heavy mid-tempo parts and fast outbursts with growling death grunts, black metal shrieks and the occasional whispered vocals to bring across the dark message. Some keys are thrown in as well, but only to provide a dark foreboding atmosphere, they certainly do not dominate the music. It's hard to name one single band Thus Defiled sound like, but a mixture of early Immortal, Dark Throne, Vital Remains and Cradle Of Filth should be a fairly accurate description of their sound. Stand out tracks are the uber-brutal "Wings of fallen majesty" and the more atmospheric "Fear us for we are the darkness", but rest assured, there is no dead wood here.

So, if this appeals to your musical taste, do try to find a copy on the internet. Don't knock on my door though, because I would never part with this underground classic!
