Album Sucks, Case Closed - 27%

OzzyApu, July 16th, 2009

The vocals are the worst part. Seriously, this band wouldn't be so grating as a Gothenburg clone had the vocals leaned toward something more inspired. This album was my introduction to the band, specifically the title track. Even then I couldn’t stand how mundane the vocals were in their modern melodic death lameness. They sound so lifeless and bland.

As for the rest of the music, I’d say it’s a step-up from Frailty. Not by any glorious margin but take what you can get. Particular praise must go to the title track, which as I said was my introduction track to the band. Now although it’s plagued by what I’m supposed to believe is a catchy chorus, I take more notes on the bumptious rhythm, the trotting power metal lead, and a very jumping beat. It’s a perfect concert track and marks the only time a solo on this album actually stands out. The guitars on this album resemble bland melodic death in their approach but the leads are fascinatingly strong and remain more up beat akin to heavy metal (much like the old days). Structure doesn’t go beyond verse-chorus-verse-etc, but there’s enough energy to keep it going. Dull moments are hardly a problem thanks to the production keeping everything sounding crunchy and alive. The double bass galloping forth in a wish-washing manner.

The formula for this band is simple enough for a pop artist, but the build-up sounds more epic and adventurous. Bass follows rhythm along like a supporting character and doesn’t really go out of its way to do anything else. I guess it’s enough to ask for since there’s hardly any room for doing anything in the first place.. The songs just sound so rigid and controlled, and no I’m not trying to criticize the band for not being progressive. You could say it’s the same problem I have with Firewind’s Allegiance – the songs may be fun and enjoyable on a decent / mediocre level but they’re the most processed, artificial, and restricted sounding songs in their respective genres.

Whatever, its melodic death metal for a modern metal crowd. The leads are happy enough to hear and the recipe is straightforward enough to get worked up over. I can’t argue with these tracks being fun for a live setting, but there just isn’t any more substance to them. After this album I just forgot about the band, and now I finally have the resolve to never hear these guys again.
