Some people praise Black Dahlia back when their music was more along the lines of Metalcore fused with Death Metal. Some people wonder why Black Dahlia's fan base is pretty much half metalheads and half hardcore kids. I personally think it is because of this style of music they played on this demo. They pleased both metalheads and hardcore kids. I think that this is a decent demo, but I like their newer stuff better. I only say this because Death Metal is my favorite style of music and I hate Hardcore and Metalcore.
As for the music, it is very well put together for an early release. It is more technical than your average Metalcore band, but it seems to be right along the lines of melodic Death Metal as well. Each song has its parts of being fast and being slow and always trades off Death Metal riffs with Metalcore riffs. There are more breakdowns on this demo than anything else they have put out. Even though I hate Metalcore, these guys put these two genres of music together very well.
So, in short, if you like Metalcore and if you like Death Metal and you like to hear them combined, then listen to this demo. Also, if you are a Dahlia fan and would like to hear their past, then listen to this demo.
Hardcore kids playing death metal... damn I'm a sucker for these bands now! The Black Dahlia Murder have nothing to envy from such metal powerhouses as Bleeding Through, Darkest Hour.
But enough with the comparisons!! The Black Dahlia Murder have quite a few things of their own, besides beautifully crafted metal riffs... first, they have total speed. I love how the song (And The Chorus Sang) constantly alternates between mid tempo and lightning fast beats... not for the of heart! They also bring a surprising element of terror to all of their songs... imagine velvet covered riffs hiding massive spike pits... you never know what to expect! And I love it... they could have gone for the usual, classically predictable method of writing metal songs, but they ignored a lot of the rules, and in fact wrote their own.
I give this record a strong 8/10... and I just can't imagine what the future holds for The Black Dahlia Murder. Sometimes bands of the highest quality leave us as fast as they come... though now they have a new EP out on Lovelost Record. I have never heard of this label, and I really hope they can push TBDM in the right direction, cause I certainly want to hear more from them!
Before the masses were exposed to TBDM with the 2003 release of Unhallowed, the underground hardcore/metalcore scene was lucky enough to hear from a talented new band back in 2001 when the fusion of death metal with metalcore was on the rise, made popular by groups like Red Sky and Prayer for Cleansing.
After a short, mellow intro, the fury that is The Black Dahlia Murder slowly unravels over a 6-track demo, which takes its name from the NES game Castlevania 2. Fusing the brutality of death metal with the melodic passages and vocals of metalcore, What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse is sure to get you thrashing, headbanging, and bleeding as you hack yourself up in sheer excitment.
