Sunneater ((o)) are obviously trying to rip off Sunn O))). I hate drone metal with a passion but for some reason, this disk attracted my attention. After reading the review posted by somebody else over this work, I simply had to have it. Anything that can piss off a drone fan that much has to be good.
As mentioned before, Sunneater ((o)) are ripping off Sunn O))), so through out this review, I will be comparing the two to each other.
Let's start with the first track on this release, "Trampled". One thing I thought was strange was that they used drums. It was a great addition, it brought some life to the recording and added some eventfulness into the track. It set up a good pace for the rest of the song and fit together well with the riffage produced by the guitar. The vocals... I was rather surprised it wasn't an old timey AM radio broadcasting of somebody reciting poetry as seen in Sunn O)))'s "My Wall". It's a raspy grunting noise which actually reminds me much of Kirk Windstein's vocal style. I must say, it also harmonizes with the fuzzy chorus tone of the guitar fairly well.
The next and last track is "Valley of Unrest". This track contains drums very similar to that in the first track. The guitar sounds slightly thicker and the riffs are more in number and more diverse than the first track's. It is longer and instrumental, but it is just as enjoyable as the first. In comparison, Sunn O)))'s work is mostly instrumental and doesn't go anywhere throughout the length of the songs. "Valley of Unrest" goes someplace. It starts crawling, speeds up to a slow trot, then gets back on it's belly and crawls out, all the while keeping me interested with new progressions of varying paces and unique chords. While Sunn O)))'s stuff usually starts up within a few seconds and then repeats one simplistic riff for somewhere between fifteen and thirty minutes.
Very short for drone metal at only eighteen minutes long. The first track on Sunn O)))'s demo is longer and less than half as good. I started to wonder if this was actually drone metal. It sounds a tad bit too heavy to be drone in my opinion. It's faster and more complicated than Sunn O))). I can honestly say that I feel this is doom metal instead of drone. They don't last as long, they're authentically heavy, and use filthy vocals. I don't know much about drone, but in comparison to the stuff I've heard, these guys don't fit in with it.
In conclusion, these guys are heavier than any drone I've ever heard (not that that's saying much) and they do what they do well. I would advise you to get this if you would enjoy seeing the doom genre rape and then murder the drone genre.
