Stielas Storhett / Aenaon - Er / Alter Ego

A Progressive Alliance - 85%

serafimsott, November 18th, 2013

The Greek avant–garde black metal act Aenaon and the atmospheric one-man black metal project Stielas Storhett from Russia decided to work together. Their diversity and his musical phrases joined in an 7” single release (limited to 300 copies) with one track of each. These are the latest releases of both to discuss here, so knowledge and reference material are present.

It is known that Aenaon has a unique perspective on making music in the black metal paths. Their track proves it again. Inspired by their classic own history, it tells the story of the myth of Er. Musically this translates to music transgressions between mid-tempo heavy metal and black metal. Chorus is catchy, certainly no standard black in any case, with blast beats as a spherical centerpiece along with piano and saxophone, as we are used to Aenaon. An interesting composition that combines the most diverse musical elements in a delicate way.

Alter Ego, the contribution of Stielas Storhett to this single, with a first listen is a lot more basic and raw. All eventually change as from raw riffs and layered guitar lines, raw black metal screams and fast drumming come clean guitars and a voice passage to talking clean vocals. Certainly less complex and progressive the Aenaon, but still looking for the deviation of the safe paths trodden black metal. The atmosphere here is especially melancholic.

The contribution of Aenaon appeals to me personally more of the two, because there is so much more going on, and the number of instances it has. The interest arises precisely when there two tracks player after each other in reverse order as discussed here: first the raw, more classic black metal oriented track, then the experimental exercise.
