'Primal' by Srefa is one of those records that I honestly can't listen to from beginning to end in one listening, and I've tried. Srefa plays a bland style of black metal that many have done before, and far better. One of the most important buildings blocks of this genre is having a a strong guitar delivery that can carry a song. Unfortunately, most of the guitar riffs here are extremely indistinguishable and unimaginative. There are no catchy moments or any surprising riffs in this EP, most of the time the guitars just go through the motions with monotonous riffs that doesn't present any interesting themes. Except for a short semi-acoustic passage in the first track that sounds utterly pointless and feels extremely forced and disjointed, most of the time the guitars follows a tiring formula of monotonous distorted strumming that goes nowhere and feels like a long static wave.
The vocal delivery (which by the way is done by a female vocalist) is also very one dimensional with nothing adventurous. The lyrics feel very disjointed and pointless, with some weird word choices and some very cliché moments. The bass guitar is mostly inaudible and the drums are too buried in the mix.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything good to say about this record. It felt completely uninspired and pointless. I would suggest for any upcoming band to invest more time in songwriting and trying to come up with some sort of unique identity before entering the recording studio. To sum it up, 'Primal' is a very monotonous and redundant effort. Zero originality and the songs just drags on and on without ever reaching some sort of climax.
