Spilling Entrails is a band name that might suggest the generic blood and gore that is found in slam; however, the lyrics are about dinosaurs. That sounds way more badass than the standard "fuck her right in the throat, cut her vagina out" stuff. I had high hopes for this when I saw the album was called "Slamosaurus Rex", which is possibly one of the best names ever. It turns out the actual music is nowhere near as cool as the names. The drums are programmed, and as a drummer, that is a problem. The mixing is bad. The vocals are terrible. I almost regret having to listen to it for review.
First off are the drums. I already stated that they are programmed, but you might not be able to tell right away. What really gives it away is the snare sound. It's just a crap sound. I will never understand why these slam bands think the sound of somebody beating an empty paint can sounds good. However, even with the shitty sounding drums, they are programmed well and it sounds like the programmer is competent. The mixing is another issue here though. The drums are super loud, and they even drown out the guitar. Of course that is a matter of personal preference, but it annoys the fuck out of me, so they lose points here.
Next is the guitar. I don't even really know what to say about the guitar, other than that is is audible sometimes. When it isn't being covered up by the drums and vocals, the super heavy distortion prevents it from being very enjoyable. On the other hand, the bass is pretty loud, and can be heard very clearly. I enjoy a good amount of bass in slam, so there is some positive to this album. Also, there are plenty of bass drops. Almost every slam or breakdown has a bass drop before it. They can be a bit annoying, but they don't take away from the music too much. The only other thing to mention is the grooviness of the slams, and they are pretty well written. They are somewhat technical, which keeps things somewhat interesting.
Last, the vocals. I hate the vocal performance here. Pig squeals, pig squeals, and more pig squeals. It isn't unexpected to find them in slam, but they are very loud and they rarely stop. The vocals overpower everything (except the paint cans - I mean drums) and they don't change much. Occasionally, a low burpy grow is heard, but pig squeals are often accompanying it. The vocal performance was very shitty.
Overall, this is a unique album. The music is somewhat technical, but you're constantly distracted by shitty drum sounds and "br00tal" pig squeals. To me, there is no replay value, and it wasn't enjoyable the first time. Go listen to it on youtube, and decide for yourself.
