Spawn - Systems Full of Victims

Tight and brutal death metal - 80%

makaze, October 21st, 2004

How could I describe you german band Spawn in short? - Reincarnation of Cannibal Corpse! Excellent brutal and morbid death metal which sounds like Cannibal Corpse in middle-90's. Don't get me wrong, they are not copy of them, they are just playing that specific style of death metal I really love. In some ways they even remind me of Morbid Angel and Dying Fetus. It's interesting to notice that band is playing old-school death metal and got so many listeners. It seems that many people are disappointed with last Cannibal Corpse release and they are looking for something new, for new bands that can bring back death metal. Talking about album itself, I must give you a hint to few outstanding songs - "Consumed with Pure Violence" which combines death metal and grind core (vocals are pure brutal grind core) in the style of Napalm Death; "At the Gates.." is a bit slower, short song but filled with great riffs. "Destined To Die" reminds me of Steve Tucker's vocals and solo guitar seems to be inspired by Trey from Morbid Angel, while song "Dead Among Livings" is filled with modern death metal riffs and song arrangements. There's one short "Carnival Of Souls" which reminds me a lot of Morbid Angel's album "Domination". Production is very good, but it seems there's a bit much low tones (i don't mean bass guitar, but just whole sound), but if you change few things on your equalizer, i think it will sound just ok. Production is not perfect, but anyway Spawn is not like Morbid Angel, right? They don't all have bunch of money for studio recordings. This album was created for true death metal fans, so I don't think everyone will like it. It will maybe sound to raw, or too boring, but for true death metal fans, this band and album are very good. I hope they will got even better on next album - and that would be a real masterpiece.
After all - Death is BACK!
