Anyone who knows a lot about metal would know that Canadian metal has always sucked. Soulforge isn't the case though - because they've actually released something more than usual. They've released a very unique type of melodic death metal album. People tend to think Soulforge are metalcore due to the clean vocals, but trust me they're nowhere near metalcore. There are no breakdowns - if anything there's a chorus in every song. Listening to this album, I was able to make a quick assumption that these guys were never serious about their musical careers. It seems as if they formed to make multiple live shows. The music is perfect for live concerts, and I sure do wish I can see these guys play live. Soulforge will hardly ever bore you, every second of this album is pure gold.
Soulforge play happy melodic death metal just like Japanese bands do. There is no need for anger if you want melodic music. I agree that Duality is not a very heavy album, but that does not mean it's not metal. The way Soulforge play melodic death metal is the way it should be played. They play very similar music to Throne of Chaos and Divine Souls. Bloodline and Telepathetic Bug are the best songs off this album. The reason is because it's where most of the instruments (keyboards, drums, guitar) are combined very well. The riffs are very catchy and original - no Gothenburg bullshit. The keyboards are slowly played during a song creating a calmed down atmosphere. There's an extensive use of keyboards when the guitarist decides to go for a solo which is usually after the chorus. The choruses on songs like Be My Guest and Heading Nowhere sound something like a viking metal band would write. Yep, you won't even know what to expect from Soulforge.
The vocalist uses a range of death and clean vocals. Please do not mistake these guys for being a metalcore band. Yes there's a lot of vocals exchange, but this guy has very powerful clean vocals. I feel as if the clean vocals are leftovers of the death vocals when the vocalist has lost his breath. The vocalist doesn't sing on the melody all the time, and tends to sing whenever the hell he wants. Yeah the vocalist of Soulforge is just like Jari Maenpaa - funny thing is that he actually sounds like him as well. The choruses usually involve both death and clean vocals together. The vocals are very easy to understand as the vocalist pronounces the words very well.
I tried looking for flaws in this album but I couldn't find any. I don't think any human being can hate this album at all, this is why I gave it a perfect score. Duality is a must listen to any fan of melodic death metal.
