Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond the Crimson Horizon

monumental atmospheric doom - 96%

dragons_secrets, February 13th, 2003

Hell yeah, this is the way doom was meant to sound...atmospheric,dark, brooding..its all here from one of the finest bands of the genre. Starting out with the opening soothing clean guitar of 'Seeds of the Desolate', this song starts out pretty soft with the godly vocals of Robert Lowe, (how he sings that good is beyond me) and then the song quicky gets really heavy with an awesome-ass riff and more of the perfect singing of Rob Lowe. 'The Black Castle' is an awesome song in all respects with a really heavy riff and a really cool middle section and solo. 'The Final Sin' is the weakest song on here but not to worry, because it is still quite good, its just not as memorable as the others. 'It Came Upon One Night', is without a doubt one bad-ass song with a riff that I swear will have your head-banging or nodding or whathaveyou, and check out the vocals here! Completely awesome! 'The Hourglass', somehow outdoes the song before it, its so heavy its not even funny...it has to be one the heaviest songs ever! 'Beneath the Fading Sun' starts off slow and brooding with so much friggin atmosphere that I couldn't imagine it being better and then it picks up a bit but then quickly breaks back down to a slow heavy as hell riff. 'Plague of Procreation' is the next weakest track to 'The Final Sin' but its still great needless to say. Just listen to the end of this song, its so damn dark and heavy that it can't be described! And the vocals here are once again perfect. The album ends with 'Beyond..' which is an outro that has only what sounds like wind chimes and drums, its also atmospheric as hell and is very cool. Overall this album couldn't be better. The guitar attack of Edgar Rivera and John Perez completely owns with sheer heaviness and slickness. The bass of Lyle Steadham is the great backbone to SA's sound, John Covington's drumming is played very well although he doesn't do anything that no one has never heard. But other than all of that, what makes this album so great, so epic..is the vocals of Robert Lowe. That guy's voice sounds like nothing I've ever heard. And he remains one of my top 5 favorite vocalists. If you like doom, you have to own this! Solitude Aeturnus puts the EPIC and ATMOSPHERE into doom with this one!! They definately hit the nail right on the head!
