Smell Dead - Necropoop

Generic goregrind album #8144 - 20%

BuriedUnborn, March 18th, 2021
Written based on this version: 2016, Digital, Goregrind Uruguay

Smell Dead are one of the endless goregrind bands that exist in this vast world; these bands come and go, and almost none of them leave anything other than a demo uploaded to Bandcamp or maybe a CD split that only one guy owns on Discogs. Goregrind can be an interesting genre but it's not one that's really worth sitting down and listening to, as it is more of a novelty most of the time than something really enjoyable, or at least in my opinion. The Uruguayan band we have at hand fails to prove me wrong on my thoughts, but at the very least there's something interesting going on here.

"Necropoop" is a short demo EP, it's barely over 10 minutes long, and that's quite common for a genre that has songs that rarely surpass the 1-minute mark. We have 9 tracks of which all sound the same; the guitar tends to play some chugs here and there and usually goes into some sort of senseless shredding with tremolo and sweep picking all of the time; the riffs are just some power chord chugs or said senseless shredding, there's absolutely nothing else. The guitar tone sounds lame to my ears, it's not as "heavy" as I was expecting it to be in comparison to other bands of this genre, although it might be because there isn't a bass, so the music lacks the depth a bass guitar gives it, making the guitar sound bland nad empty. The songs fail to sound chaotic or heavy in any way, and instead sound weak and boring, and add to this the fact that the band tries to take a melodic and/or experimental approach to their music, so you can find some "regular" chord progressions and not as much chromatism in the music, which is pretty common in goregrind music; at times the songs will go into a major scale which just kills the already-lacking brutality of the music and makes it sound like a low-effort bandcamp shitpost (which is very close to being already).

The drums sound programmed, and they're just average goregrind drumming; a lots of blasts and not much else. The vocals are just your regular sickening, toilet-bowl gutturals that get old after just 5 seconds; it's clear that these compositions lack any sort of lyrical content so it's just the vocalist(s) going "reeeee" for 10 fucking minutes. The very few interesting things are, as mentioned already, the "melodic" elements in the music and some novelties such as the band sampling this one overplayed electronic song in "Necropoop" and basing that track around it, or the synth at the start of Cutting Off a Thief's Head which sounds somewhat alright, or that 1-second song that is just there because why the fuck not...

I've listened to this EP twice and I felt like I lost many brain cells along the way; it's not even enjoyable goregrind to my ears, it's just a shitpost that doesn't even sound too metal at all. Listening to this it's just a waste of time in my opinion, there's nothing to be found here other than muslcao boredom. If you've got 10 minutes and want to listen to some actual novelty music with good production quality and actual originality, go listen to Clown Core instead, not this.
