I'm not very into black metal, but it's a pleasure listening to some ambient/depressive black metal once in a while. I didn't really know this band before the day I'm writing this review, and I started listening to it waiting for nothing special, as I have ever seen this particular subgenre as one with many musical limitations and little to offer as to the instrumentation or production. However, I also think that this is the best way to listen to this kind of music.
Requiem for Deads is a pretty standard album. It has all the elements to be an atmospheric black metal album: long arpeggio sections and simple and repetitive riffs with a poor production that gives that particular sensation of coldness and isolation to the music. The vocals are the same as the majority in this subgenre (shriek and painful), and the drums are in the background, with no much leadership in the mix. The music is nothing too outstanding, but it's perfect to put as background music while sitting in your armchair to relax, watching a landscape since a high place or even if you feel sad and want to intensify that feeling, I think that this music can be very useful (just don't do it too often. If so, please look for help). It's like playing Celtic, instrumental or orchestral music in the background, but for black metal fans.
Give it an opportunity. You'll probably not love it, but it will work as a way not to be very silent while doing nothing.
