Sancnity - Portrait

Sad - 95%

MetalReaper, December 11th, 2004

I don't have too many progressive metal bands in my record collection, except Dream Theater and Fates Warning. This band, Sancnity has taken some influences from there. Lyrics are full of symbolism, which is normal from the bands like the aforementioned.

The tape's stand-out track comes in immediately. "Kingdom of Joy" has an excellent guitar-riff, and there's even some double-bass drum sections. The song isn't happy overall. The vocalist sounds sad and weak, on the positive side. The song gets even darker and threatening in the end.

"The Cradle" starts acoustically, beautifully. But the track seems to be even darker and more hostile than the previous one. The choruses are shouted with anger and despair, partly because the song tells about death.

"Forever" sounds like the band Dream Theater on their Train of Thought-album, except this isn't that heavy. The guitar-riffs just sound like that they have just been taken from that album. "Forever" is the heaviest track on the tape. The end of the song is shouted through.

The last track is "Swaying". The song is instrumental and ends the album beautifully, leaving some seeds of hope.
