S.V.E.S.T. - Death to Macrocosm

Concise massacre - 90%

cinedracusio, December 17th, 2006

Well, this is no Scarification Of Soul for sure. First of all, it is shorter, less ambitious, and second, more effective!
From the first track, A-Wolf Anger, the listener is greeted with some of the most original and well-crafted melodies that a black metal band could produce. Apart from the fact that the drums are sloppy and hard to decipher (however, with the standard fast pace) the static and fuzz help in defining the chaotic nature of the atmospheric monster that Svest is. The tremolo and huge, impassionate harmonies are the secret key of this great act. The vocals have some serious echoing effect, and bring Lugubrum to mind (without the drunken singing!). It was a great pleasure to hear even a great lead that sounds almost like a folk break, only to bring a victorious (still fast and with lots of tremolo) riff, which ends this great song.
The title track begins with a lower-key riff (but with the same depressing feeling), and progresses in a manner reminiscent of Burzum, with a mid-paced Darkthrone inspired break (the rhythm and the same plodding riffing style as it could be heard on Kaatharian Life Code). The vocals sound even more inspired on this track, since the vocalist has got an almost rhythmically-wise style of shouting and shrieking. The melodies shift in simple but honest and beautiful progressions, and the song ends it the right way.
The last track, Evil War, features also a highly melodic, lead-like main riff, and the rhythm could be taken as a speed metal one. It is more monotonous, but it still has a quantity of passion and brutality mixed with melody, enough to make from Svest an unforgettable name on the scene of the new wave of black metal.
Overall, get this, if you are more allergic to bloated jams like those on their first demo. Those who seek more originality than the average Thunderstorm, Malleus Maleficarum and other guys will have nothing to be afraid.
